New Siena coach, Malesani, didn’t have the best of debuts having lost to Bari in the previous round. His team took an early lead and then, in the last 15 minutes, conceded two goals and left empty-handed. This now is the game they simply need to win and their rivals are Catania who are with a single win on their tally. This will be a real bottom derby, Sicilians are playing much better than we might conclude by the table, but they just keep missing their chances to win. The last, and a huge one of them, was that Mialn game where they were practically seconds away from winning and they still fell in the finish. Atzori is still on the helm, but even though his team plays well, they still are not collecting any points. In other words, board are running thin on patience. If he loses in Tuscany, manager Atzori will have to start packing his bags. They scored an early goal, but their limited squad prevented them from putting a better performance. It has nothing to do with their manager, god forbid, and we even think sacking Giampaolo was a huge mistake in the first palce. The change brought nothing new, and the mentioned Giampaolo was the man able to bring the most out of this team. Someone might get agitated with these lines, but we see survival as the mission impossible with Malesani on the helm. We saw his vision in Bari, and we saw it fail. The attempts to park the bus in the defense after the hosts’ equalizer cost him dearly and proved to be a really bad move. Now comes the hard part, this is the game he needs to attack. Siena were fine at home last season under Giampaolo because they didn’t concede too many goals. If we are to trust what we heard about the squad, Malesani will go with the attacking 4-3-3 formation which can be a break in his game, but we think his defense is too slow and week to endure such an open approach. Ficagna and Rosi are suspended, couple of more players are long injured, it will all add up to the misery because Siena are almost the ideal pray for teams like Catania in these games. When they are defending, then they look much better. For example, they were much better rivals in a Palermo derby. Still, against Milan they got scared and parked the bus in defense and that cowardice approach brought them a quite deserved loss. Against Lazio, Roma and Napoli, this same team created a lot of chances and still had to settle for a point so we have to understand their fear. It is not easy to play good and to get little out of it. they will be under pressure here as well, but if they go for a point, they will probably go for all three too. Situation with the squad is looking up, key players are recovered. Coach Atzori expects Morimoto and Mascara to wake up and to start scoring some goals for a change. Nothing has changed in the approach from last year and Zenga’s reign, but there was a slight difference, they used to score goals then and now they miss quite unbelievable chances. They beat Empoli in the Cup contest, but it is irrelevant since the managed rested his main players. Interestingly enough, ever since they came to Serie A, they have never lost in Tuscany, all three times the result was 1:1.We think that Catania won’t lose and we will even suggest higher stakes on guests not to lose. If you are willing to cut the stakes a bit, try clear away win, we are somehow confident this will be a breaking point for Siena to their certain journey to Serie B despite it is only a third of the season gone. After a couple of years of constant sale of the best palyers, they failed to find the adequate replacements and it came back to haunt them.
